(Pictures forthcoming) March, 2009- Just returned from the KWPN-NA Annual Meeting in Del Mar, CA and it was probably one of the best annual meetings the KWPN-NA has ever had. We spent a day and a half with Cor Loeffen, a KWPN judge, former KWPN stallion committee member and trainer of Olympic horses, and he carefully taught us linear scoring of both dressage and jumping horses. Using that information, we judged many horses for ourselves and then discussed with them with Cor and the KWPN-NA Jury. It was a fantastic "live" learning experience. Later, Cor gave a clinic with young horses in both jumping and dressage and went through the riding and training preparation for the development of young horses for competition. It was clear to all of us why Cor has had such a successful career with sporthorses. Steffen Peters then rode a super young stallion by Rhodium and discussed what he looks for in young dressage prospects. Steffen said he looks for three things: "Suppleness, suppleness and suppleness." He said this with a smile, but truly was serious in that is the most important quality to a horse. As he rode the young stallion, he offered training tips and advice in working with young horses. The highlight with Steffen was when he rode Ravel, his 2008 Olympic Horse and World Cup qualifier. Steffen went through his warm-up with Ravel and then, rode him to his new World Cup freestyle. We were the first people to see the new freestyle prior to the World Cup the following month. It was fantastic! Finally, the meeting was ended by an exciting awards ceremony and silent auction. Congratulations to the Breeder of the Year, Dr. Deborah Harrison, the Member of the Year, Janko van de Lageweg and the Horse of the Year, Hickstead. During the ceremony, our mare Zen Rosa keur, elite, (Farrington x Jazz x Purioso) received a beautiful trophy and check for winning Reserve North American Champion for the four year old DG Bar Cup. We are very proud of her.
